Free and actually good
OpenClaw — Open source agent framework. My full review. Does 80% of what paid platforms do at 0% of the cost.
Ollama — Run AI models locally. Free. Great for tasks where you do not want data leaving your machine.
n8n — Workflow automation. Self-hosted, open source. Connects to 400+ services. Not AI-native but works great as agent tool backend.
Worth paying for
Claude API (Anthropic) — Best reasoning of any model I have tried. $3-15 per million tokens depending on the model. My default for agent brains.
Ahrefs — $99/month. Nothing else comes close for backlink analysis and keyword research. Not AI but essential for anyone doing SEO with agents.
Skip these
Anything that promises “autonomous business management” — Overpromises, underdelivers. We are not there yet.
AI writing tools over $30/month — The API directly is always cheaper and more flexible.
