Let me be direct: I review AI toolkits for a living. I test what works and call out what doesn’t. And what Meta is doing right now looks less like a strategic play and more like panic spending with a press release attached.
The Numbers Don’t Add Up
Meta’s 2026 capital expenditure plans sit between $115 billion and $135 billion. That’s not a typo. That’s more than most countries spend on their entire military budgets. For context, that’s roughly what the entire global semiconductor industry invests annually across all companies combined.
What are they getting for this money? Muse Spark, a model that arrives nine months after Meta made headlines by hiring Alexandr Wang from Scale AI. Nine months. In AI development terms, that’s either remarkably fast or suspiciously rushed. Given the competitive pressure from OpenAI and Google, I’m betting on the latter.
The Toolkit Reviewer’s Perspective
Here’s what matters to developers and businesses actually building with AI tools: reliability, documentation, integration ease, and cost. Meta has historically struggled with three out of four of these categories. Their open-source Llama models gained traction primarily because they were free, not because they were superior.

The Alexandr Wang hiring was supposed to signal Meta’s seriousness about AI. But hiring one person, even someone with Wang’s credentials, doesn’t transform an entire organization’s AI capabilities overnight. It takes time to build teams, establish processes, and create a culture that can actually ship useful AI products.
What This Means for Developers
If you’re building AI-powered applications, Meta’s massive spending spree might seem like good news. More competition should mean better tools, right? Maybe. But it could also mean a flood of half-baked products rushed to market to justify those expenditures.
I’ve tested enough AI toolkits to know that the best ones come from companies that understand their users’ actual problems. They don’t come from companies desperately trying to prove they belong in a race they joined late.

Will I test Muse Spark? Absolutely. Will I give it a fair shake? Of course. But I’m not holding my breath for a miracle. Meta has a long history of announcing ambitious AI projects that fail to gain meaningful traction outside their own ecosystem.
The AI toolkit space doesn’t need another model from a company trying to catch up. It needs tools that actually work, that integrate smoothly, and that solve real problems. Whether Muse Spark delivers on any of those fronts remains an open question—one that $135 billion can’t answer by itself.
