$21 billion. That is the size of the SpaceX stake Nvidia disclosed at the end of the second quarter, according to reporting from CNBC, the Financial Times, and Bloomberg. And if that number alone didn’t raise your eyebrows, Bloomberg added another one to the pile: Nvidia is also sitting on roughly $30 billion in Intel shares.

I review AI toolkits for a living. I spend my days poking at SDKs, benchmarking inference stacks, and telling you which agent frameworks are worth your weekend. So why am I writing about a rocket company investment? Nvidia Is Not Just Your GPU Vendor Anymore

Why a Toolkit Reviewer Cares

When I evaluate a toolkit, one of my standing questions is: who benefits when you adopt this? Not just technically — financially. A framework that funnels you toward one vendor’s hardware deserves a different review than one that runs anywhere. That has always been true, but it matters more when that vendor’s interests keep expanding.

  • Vendor concentration is real and growing. If Nvidia can casually reveal tens of billions in outside stakes, its gravitational pull on the AI ecosystem is not shrinking. Every toolkit that hard-codes CUDA assumptions is betting on that gravity continuing.
  • The Intel stake complicates the “alternatives” story. A common hedge I hear from teams is that Intel or other chipmakers will eventually offer real competition and portable toolchains. Bloomberg’s reporting that Nvidia holds $30 billion in Intel shares doesn’t kill that story, but it does complicate the clean rivalry narrative people were counting on.
  • Portability deserves more weight in your evaluations. I’ve started scoring toolkits higher when they abstract the hardware layer well. Not because Nvidia hardware is bad — it’s excellent — but because concentration risk is a cost, even if it never shows up on your invoice.

Ask whether your inference framework can target other backends without a rewrite. Ask whether your agent stack assumes a specific accelerator. Ask what your migration cost looks like, and write the number down, even if you never plan to pay it. The teams that do this aren’t paranoid — they’re just pricing in the reality that one company sits under nearly everything in this space, and that company keeps getting bigger in ways that have nothing to do with selling you a GPU.
